Played first cornet in the 30s and probably up to the war.

David began with the band in 1994, originally learning cornet and moving on to euphonium a few years later which he continues to play today. He left in 2001 for university, and regularly returns to play during the holidays. He's also the web master for this site!

Graeme began with the band in 1994, learning cornet and moving on to soprano cornet. He left in 2003 for university, where he took his skills into Warwick University's Big Band.

Was Librarian and looked after the bandroom.

Martin played cornet with the band from 1980 to 1991, eventually ending up on principal cornet. After leaving, he then joined Besses o the Barn and he then went onto play at Bollington Band, where he still plays playing Flugal. He still lives in Buxton.  

Martin also plays alto sax with Resouled, a soul band based in Macc with other members of Bollington Band and Helen Sleigh (a current member). He arranges all the music for the soul band and has done some arrangements for brass band.

Gilman, Les
 
Les came to Burbage from Harpur Hill Band and was a long serving baritone player who served on the committee and was secretary for many years. Les sadly passed away in October 2003.
Gilman, Peter
 
Peter was a member of the band in the late 1950s and early 60s. He was taught on the cornet by the late Roy Orrit and was a member of Harpur Hill Band before joining Burbage under Harry Fletcher as the Musical Director.

He was a member of the National Youth Brass Band playing under Sir Adrian Bolt, Harry Mortimer and the founder of the National Youth Brass Band Dr Denis Wright.

Peter has fond memories of playing with Les Orrit, Charlie Brindley, Don Redfern (his coach), Colin Mcbean, Peter Alcock, and the Thompson brothers.

He recalls when the band was marching at Staley Bridge and setting off after the usual refreshment in the local pub, Colin McBean shouted "STOP THE BAND, I HAVE LEFT MY NEW FALSE TEETH IN THE ASH TRAY." He told Colin not to worry, just press the valves and he would play extra loud - Happy memories.

Played trombone in the senior band having learnt with the band. After graduating from Sheffield University in Engineering, George moved away to Oxfordshire and still plays trombone with the Kidlington band.

  A product of our junior band, James played cornet between 1999 and 2004

  Joining the band on horn as a product of our juniors, Patrick went on to play eb and Bb Bass before leaving for university in 2005

Higgins, Sarah 

  Sarah served the band with distinction as solo trombone, between 1988 and 2004 having learnt with the junior band. Sarah left the band firstly to do a gap year in Sri Lanka after which she studied medicine at Sheffield. Sarah continued her playing with the Stannington Band. Sarah's mum and dad still serve the committee of Burbage, and her younger sister plays trombone.

Came to Burbage from Dove Holes Band in the early sixties and became Musical Director.

Played Front Row Cornet. Affectionatly known as Wid, Chris now lives in New Zealand

Father of Marcus, joined for the same period 1987 – 1991. Played both cornet and horn. Now no longer plays, but has contact with the band by bring his Grandson Kieran to juniors.

Learned and played the cornet with brother Alwyn in the 1970s and 80s. A very talented player who now mainly plays jazz and big band
Jones, Marcus
 
Joined in 1987 on Tenor Horn, moved on to Eb Bass in 1989. Served as librarian and on the committee, wining Bandsmen of the year during his time with the band. Now plays with Macclesfield Silk brass band, but still remains a good friend to the band helping out when ever possible.
Kelly, Steve
 
Learned and played the Bb Bass for over thirty years before retiring in the mid 1990s. Steve acted as band sargeant from 1986, around which time he was twice bandsman of the year, as well as being a committee member for well over ten years. Steve has returned to help on the committee in recent years.
Kidd, Geoff
 
Geoff Kidd joined the band probably in 1935 when he was 10 years old, and played third cornet under Harry Fletcher. He left at the age of 13 but was persuaded to join the band again in his 50's, and played second cornet under Richard Bailey and Barry Thompson. He enjoyed playing in Bad Neuham, and still has the record, Chatsworth, which they made.

Past members not on the list also are Fred Alcock first cornet and Ben Heath solo horn. These were playing in the 30's and probably up to the war.

Macbean, Colin
 

Colin was taught to play by the late Charles (Father) Kitchen and, after playing initially with Chapel en le Frith Band, joined Burbage Band in 1953.  He was made a Life Member 40 years later after playing cornet, Bass Drum and acting as Bandmaster.  He eventually retired from playing in 1999 but still supported the band by serving on the committee.  Colin was also a keen supporter of Black Dyke Band and Manchester City and whilst he never played for Black Dyke, he and Burbage Band did play at Main Road before City went on to win the cup at Wembly.  Burbage have, however, loaned him and their bass drum to Fodens. Colin sadly passed away in February 2003. Burbage Band provided a musical tribute at his funeral service.

Harry acted as professional advisor and conductor to Burbage on many occasions during the 70s and 80s.  Harry is better known as the resident conductor of many famous championship bands.

Frank learned with the band and played the euphonium with Burbage as well as conducting the  Ferodo Works Band.

Played front row cornet. Was married to Melanie, Don Redferns daughter. He was awarded Bandsman of The Year.  Now plays for Bollington.
Newsome, Roy
 
Roy is currently professional advisor and conductor for Burbage and has been with the band throughout the 90s.  Roy has also conducted many top championship bands as well as the National Youth Brass Band.  Roy is also a composer and arranger (see “Hear Us”).
Orrit, Les
 
The legendary Les Oritt is a life member of the band having given over 50 years service. Les is fondly remembered for his teaching of juniors over many years, himself having been taught at Burbage in the same way.  He played the Bb bass and was responsible for the trips made to London in the 50s and 60s. He passed away in the early 1990s

Redfern, Don
 
Don learnt to play with Burbage in the 40s, and after being one of the band’s longest serving Bandmasters, was made a Life Member.  He played the Eb bass and bass trombone, eventually progressing to be the Musical Director.  He and his wife Betty also served on the committee and Don was Chairman whilst his daughters Melanie and Sandra played the Flugel Horn and percussion.  Don was also chairman of both the High Peak and North West Brass Bands Associations.

Don’s contribution to banding is remembered with the Don Redfern Memorial Bandstand in the Pavilion Gardens, which was opened on Sunday 7th September 1997 by Betty Redfern.  Burbage Band were joined at the opening by representatives from other local bands to play a joint tribute.

Geoff came to Burbage from Fairfield Band to play Principal Euphonium in the late seventies until about 1988. He retired to Cornwall
Thompson, Barry
 
Barry is the son of George and also learned with the band.  Barry played cornet and then laterthe trombone, before moving to the fairey band of Stockport. He returned to burabeg as Conductor in 1987 before returning to playing with marple band.
Thompson, Fred
 

Fred was the brother of Jim and George; he played the cornet before he went in the army in the 2nd World War. He moved to Seven Oaks, where he played until he was aged 80, and died aged 84.

George came to Burbage as the Musical Director of Grimethorpe Colliery Band in the 1960s to act as professional adviser to Don Redfern.

George learned to play with Burbage Band playing the Eb bass.  He served on the committee and was also chairman for a while.  Les, Jim and George had the reputation of being the best bass section in the High Peak.

Jeff was a member from from the late 70's until 1988, during don redferns long stint as conductor. Jeff played a variety of positions from cornet to Eb bass, taking in two trips to Germany. For a time Jeff was also the secretary of the band. Jeff is now playing baritone with the Fairfield.
